Canyon Investigation

Providence, USA
ASTA Awards

Through RISD, I was awarded a travel grant to analyze and study the canyons in Nevada and Arizona. Canyons have a unique clay quality formulated by nature. Clay as a material has a unique dual characteristic. It is fluid when wet and stiff when hard. However, due to scale, architects use clay in forms of bricks and tiles. But clay has the capacity to be more. The capacity to create a unique space. To create a clay-like space. Over the period of two weeks, southwestern regions were traveled and recorded. To understand the methods of nature. To begin a conversation with nature of clay and clay architecture.
Canyons have been thought of as layers of marking. They are the carvings and different marks of nature. This methodology was translated in creating these sculptures. Photographs were taken from the sites I have vistied. It was a tool to record the physical details. With the memory of the experience and looking at the photographs, I was able to translate the experience of the canyons as well as a physical nature of the canyons through various drawings and sketches. These abstraction then help formulate my Canyon Sculptures.
